Residence permits
Worldwide, more than 30 countries offer special programs to obtain a residence permit directly through investments, a steady foreign income, or professional qualifications.
The most popular programs are primarily divided into so-called Golden Visas (investments) and visas for financially independent individuals (retirees/digital nomads).

Europe (focus on investments and assets)
The European programs are particularly attractive because they often allow visa-free travel throughout the Schengen Area.
Portugal: The Portugal Golden Visa is available with an investment of €250,000 or more (e.g., in cultural projects or investment funds). Alternatively, there is the D7 visa for people with passive income (such as pensions or rental income).
Greece: A residence permit can be obtained through the Golden Visa program by purchasing real estate or investing in funds. Minimum purchase amounts vary significantly by region.
Hungary: Has introduced a renewed guest investor program that grants a residence permit for up to 10 years for investments of €250,000 or more in funds.
Malta: Offers permanent residence through the Malta Permanent Residence Programme via a combination of government fees, property rental or purchase, and a charitable donation.
Spain & Cyprus: Spain offers residence permits in exchange for real estate investments of €500,000 or more, while Cyprus grants lifelong permanent residence for real estate investments of €300,000 or more.
🌎 America (Focus on income and speed)
Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean often score points with lower financial hurdles and faster procedures.
Mexico: Offers very straightforward visas for "Temporary Residence". The requirement is proof of a minimum monthly income or equivalent bank balance.
Uruguay: Considered one of the quickest countries to reach for a permanent residence permit, often granted directly upon application and with minimal financial requirements.
Canada: Utilizes the points-based Express Entry System, through which qualified professionals can obtain permanent residency within 6 to 12 months.
Caribbean states (e.g. Antigua and Barbuda): Offer direct citizenship or residency programs in exchange for donations to state funds or real estate investments.
🌏 Asia & Middle East
Thailand: The "Thailand Elite" program offers long-term visas for 5 to 20 years for a one-time fee without much red tape.
United Arab Emirates (UAE): The UAE's "Golden Visa" grants investors, entrepreneurs and highly talented professionals a residence permit for 5 or 10 years without a local sponsor.
Malaysia: Offers long-term residency rights for foreigners who meet certain financial criteria (bank balances and income) through the "Malaysia My Second Home" (MM2H) program.
